Cloud Certifications Explained compares AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud credentials by role, level, assessment and maintenance. The best cloud certification is not automatically the one attached to the largest platform or highest salary survey. It is the credential that matches the environment, responsibilities and experience level of the learner.
Cloud roles combine networking, identity, security, operating systems, automation, cost management and application architecture. A certification can validate part of that knowledge, but practical work remains essential.

Choose by role before choosing by vendor
| Role direction | Core responsibilities | Credential level to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud literacy | Understand services, pricing, governance and shared responsibility. | Fundamentals or digital leader. |
| Cloud administrator or engineer | Deploy, operate, monitor, secure and troubleshoot resources. | Associate role-based credential. |
| Solutions architect | Translate requirements into resilient, secure and cost-aware designs. | Associate then professional/advanced. |
| Cloud security | Identity, controls, monitoring, threat response and governance. | Security specialization after foundations. |
| DevOps/platform | Automation, CI/CD, infrastructure as code and observability. | Role credential plus practical delivery projects. |
| Data/AI cloud | Pipelines, analytics, databases, machine learning and governance. | Data or AI specialization matched to platform. |
AWS certification path
AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner
Cloud Practitioner is the foundational AWS credential. It is appropriate for newcomers, business professionals and technical candidates who need a structured overview before an associate exam. AWS currently prices the exam at US$100.
AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate
Solutions Architect – Associate focuses on secure, resilient, high-performing and cost-optimized design. AWS lists a US$150 exam fee, a three-year validity period and recommends at least one year of hands-on AWS solution-design experience. It is one of the strongest general AWS credentials for professionals who already understand infrastructure.
Other AWS associate and advanced routes
Candidates can branch into operations, development, data, machine learning or security. Professional and specialty exams cost more and assume deeper experience. Choose them only when the target work requires that depth.
Microsoft Azure certification path
Azure Fundamentals
Azure Fundamentals covers cloud concepts, Azure architecture and services, and management and governance. Microsoft classifies it as beginner level. It is useful for orientation but does not validate production administration.
Azure Administrator Associate
Azure Administrator Associate validates identity, governance, storage, compute, networking and monitoring. Microsoft classifies it as intermediate, expects infrastructure familiarity and currently applies a 12-month renewal cycle. Eligible role-based certifications can be renewed through an online Microsoft Learn assessment at no cost.
Architecture, security and data routes
Microsoft offers role-based and specialty credentials for architecture, security, data, development and DevOps. The right route depends on whether the learner operates Azure resources, designs solutions, secures identities, engineers data or delivers software.
Google Cloud certification path
Cloud Digital Leader
Cloud Digital Leader is a broad business and technology credential. It is most suitable for people who need to understand Google Cloud capabilities, transformation and value rather than administer infrastructure.
Associate Cloud Engineer
Associate Cloud Engineer assesses setup, implementation, operation, access and security. Google currently lists no formal prerequisite, a US$125 registration fee, a three-year validity period and at least six months of recommended hands-on experience.
Google has announced a revised English standard and renewal exam effective June 30, 2026. Candidates booking on or after that date should use the new exam guide.
Professional credentials
Google’s professional certifications cover architecture, security, data engineering, machine learning, DevOps and other functions. They are better suited to experienced practitioners because design and operations questions assume real-world judgment.
Major cloud credentials compared
| Credential | Level | Current official signal | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| AWS Cloud Practitioner | Foundational | US$100 exam; no mandatory training | Cloud literacy and first AWS step |
| AWS Solutions Architect – Associate | Associate | US$150; three-year validity; one year hands-on recommended | AWS solution design |
| Azure Fundamentals | Beginner | Foundational Azure exam; regional pricing | Cloud concepts and Azure orientation |
| Azure Administrator Associate | Intermediate | Annual renewal; infrastructure experience expected | Azure operations and administration |
| Google Cloud Digital Leader | Foundational | Business-oriented credential | Cloud literacy and transformation |
| Google Associate Cloud Engineer | Associate | US$125; three-year validity; six months hands-on recommended | Google Cloud deployment and operations |
Which cloud provider should you choose?
- Use local demand. Review current vacancies in your region and industry rather than relying on global market-share headlines.
- Use employer environment. If your company uses Microsoft identity and hybrid infrastructure, Azure may provide immediate application. AWS may dominate another sector; Google Cloud may be stronger in particular data or digital-native environments.
- Use your existing skills. Windows administration, Linux, software development, data engineering and networking lead to different cloud routes.
- Use access to practice. The platform you can use safely in a workplace, sandbox or well-controlled personal account is easier to learn deeply.
- Control cost. Configure budgets and alerts before experimenting. Cloud learning can create unexpected consumption charges.
Cloud certification ROI
The direct exam fee is only a small part of the cost. Include training, lab subscriptions, cloud consumption, retakes, time away from paid work and renewal. The benefit side should include access to responsibilities, interviews, internal projects and measurable improvements—not a guaranteed salary increase.
| ROI component | Examples |
|---|---|
| Direct cost | Exam, tax, training, practice tests and retakes. |
| Learning cost | Cloud usage, lab subscriptions and equipment. |
| Time cost | Study hours and time not spent on other career activity. |
| Career benefit | Eligibility for cloud projects, interviews or promotion. |
| Evidence benefit | Deployments, architecture portfolio and operational competence. |
| Maintenance cost | Renewal assessment, recertification and continuous learning. |
Common mistakes
- Starting with a professional-level architecture exam without operations experience.
- Learning service names without understanding networking, identity, security and cost.
- Earning all three providers’ fundamentals credentials instead of developing depth.
- Using copied labs that cannot be explained or rebuilt.
- Ignoring exam-version and renewal changes.
- Treating an occupation’s median salary as the salary of certification holders.
Cloud certification should validate a body of work. Build the environment, document the decisions, then use the exam to confirm the knowledge.
AWS, Azure and Google Cloud: deeper comparison
| Decision area | AWS | Microsoft Azure | Google Cloud |
|---|---|---|---|
| Common enterprise fit | Broad cloud-native and infrastructure adoption. | Strong fit with Microsoft identity, productivity and hybrid environments. | Strong presence in data, analytics and digital-native environments. |
| Entry credential | Cloud Practitioner. | Azure Fundamentals. | Cloud Digital Leader. |
| Operations credential | Associate operations or architecture route. | Azure Administrator Associate. | Associate Cloud Engineer. |
| Renewal model | AWS credentials generally valid for three years. | Role-based credentials generally renew annually. | Associate Cloud Engineer currently valid for three years. |
| Best selection evidence | Target-employer AWS use and access to practical labs. | Employer reliance on Microsoft ecosystem and hybrid infrastructure. | Target-employer GCP use, data platform work and available practice. |
Portfolio projects that strengthen a cloud certification
Secure web workload
Deploy a small application with network segmentation, identity controls, encrypted storage, monitoring, backup and a documented recovery process. Explain the cost model and the tradeoffs between managed and self-managed services.
Identity and access review
Create users, groups and roles using least privilege. Document an access-review process, emergency access and how credentials are protected. Identity work is central across all three major providers.
Infrastructure as code
Use a supported infrastructure-as-code tool to create and remove a repeatable environment. Include version control, variables, state handling, change review and basic testing.
Cost and reliability assessment
Estimate monthly cost, configure budgets and alerts, and explain how the design handles failure. A technically functional deployment that ignores cost and resilience is incomplete.
Exam-preparation strategy
- Start with the official exam guide. Training courses should be checked against it, not the other way around.
- Use a sandbox safely. Configure spending limits, alerts and resource-cleanup routines.
- Practice explanation. Be able to justify service choices, not only recognize correct answers.
- Use official assessments. Identify weak domains and return to hands-on work.
- Check the date. Cloud services and exam blueprints change frequently.
Multi-cloud: when it becomes worthwhile
Multi-cloud knowledge is valuable when a role genuinely spans providers, a consultancy serves varied clients or an architecture must account for portability and vendor risk. It is usually premature for a beginner. Depth in one provider teaches the operational realities needed to understand where platforms differ.
A sensible progression is one fundamentals credential if needed, one role-based credential, real work, then selective breadth. Three introductory certifications do not equal one year of operating a cloud environment.
Global and regional considerations
Cloud services are global, but job demand, data residency, government procurement and language support vary. Certification exam prices may differ by region and tax. Microsoft prices exams by country or region; AWS maintains local-currency pricing in selected markets; Google lists taxes where applicable. Always use the issuer’s checkout and local policy pages for the final cost.
Cloud career reality
Cloud work is rarely isolated from the rest of IT. Employers may expect Linux or Windows administration, networking, scripting, security, databases, development practices and stakeholder communication. The strongest cloud candidates use the certification to organize this knowledge and then prove it through reliable systems.
Frequently asked questions
The answer depends on region, industry and employer. Search current vacancies and identify which platform appears alongside responsibilities you can realistically perform.
No. Experienced IT professionals may move directly to an associate role-based exam. Beginners may benefit from a fundamentals credential, but it should be followed by hands-on work.
No. They can validate structured knowledge and make skills easier to communicate. Production responsibility, troubleshooting and judgment still come from practice.
Multi-cloud breadth is useful after achieving depth in one platform. Early-career learners usually gain more from one coherent path than from three introductory badges.
